OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On November 15, 2021, 45-year-old Maurice Monk was found unresponsive in his cell at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, California. Monk, who had mental health and other healthcare needs, had been left unchecked in his cell for several days. An internal investigation revealed that deputies and medical staff failed to conduct required welfare checks, and some allegedly falsified records to indicate checks had been performed. In November 2024, Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price filed felony charges against seven sheriff's deputies, two former deputies, and two medical staff members for dependent adult abuse and neglect in connection with Monk's death. Three of the defendants were also charged with falsifying documents. Monk's family previously settled a lawsuit against the county for $7 million.
