OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/11/2021, at approximately 5:00 a.m., a Metropolitan Nashville Police Department officer observed a suspicious vehicle parked in front of a business in the 5500 block of Charlotte Pike and stopped to investigate. The driver, later identified as 31-year-old Daniel Turney Crowley of Trussville, Alabama, was seated inside the vehicle holding a knife. The officer repeatedly ordered Crowley to drop the knife while waiting for backup to arrive. After approximately three minutes of refusing commands, Crowley opened the vehicle door, exited with the knife, and charged toward the officers. Three officers fired their service weapons, striking Crowley. Officers rendered medical aid until Nashville Fire Department personnel arrived, but Crowley died at a hospital.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation conducted the independent investigation at the request of the Davidson County District Attorney General under the memorandum of understanding governing officer-involved shootings in Nashville. Investigators collected physical evidence, interviewed witnesses, and reviewed body-worn camera recordings before submitting the case to the District Attorney for review.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department later released body-worn camera footage showing the encounter from the responding officers' perspectives. The video documented the initial contact with Crowley, repeated commands to drop the knife, the arrival of additional officers, and the fatal shooting after Crowley ran toward them while still armed.
