REASON WHY PURSUIT WAS INITIATED:
At approximately 5:30 a.m., Sanger Police responded to reports of possible vehicle burglaries in the 300 block of North 5th Street. Officers located a white Ford extended-cab pickup they believed was connected to the reported burglaries and attempted a traffic stop. The 14-year-old driver continued driving away and police escalated a pursuit.

EVENT NARRATIVE:
On 11/21/2021, at approximately 5:30 a.m., Sanger Police officers attempted to stop the pickup in the 300 block of North 5th Street. Police pursued the vehicle south through Sanger until, approximately one-half mile from the attempted stop, the 14-year-old driver lost control and crashed into a tree in the 700 block of South 5th Street.

Nelson, Brian Atian Hutson, 16, and Kevin Xzavier Angeles, 14, were killed. The 14-year-old driver and an 18-year-old passenger survived. All three teenagers who died were passengers.

Nelson was born on 02/02/2006 and lived in Argyle, Texas. Denton-area death records identify his full name as Nelson Steven Candelario Lopez Vargas and confirm that he died in Sanger on 11/21/2021.
