On 07/28/2023, Greenfield Police Department officers responded to a welfare check involving 42-year-old Tracie Dorpat, who was reported to be experiencing a mental health crisis near South 43rd Street and West Layton Avenue. According to investigators, Dorpat was sitting or lying in the roadway when the first responding officer arrived. The officer's patrol vehicle struck and ran over Dorpat as it entered the scene. Officers immediately began lifesaving measures, but Dorpat was pronounced dead from her injuries.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation investigated the incident. Authorities later stated the responding officer did not see Dorpat in the roadway before the collision. The officer was placed on administrative duty during the investigation.
Dorpat's family strongly disputed the circumstances of her death, stating that she should not have been run over by the officer who had been dispatched to help her during a mental health crisis. They retained legal counsel and, in August 2023, announced their intent to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the City of Greenfield. The family also called for changes in police training and emergency response to people experiencing mental health crises. In 2025, the City of Greenfield agreed to pay $4 million to settle the wrongful death lawsuit filed by Dorpat's estate.
