On 07/27/2023, 54-year-old Nidia Nieves was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle northbound on Interstate 87 near the Exit 16/17 interchange in Cornwall. According to New York State Police, an off-duty New York City Police Department officer driving a Honda CR-V crossed the center median into the northbound lanes and struck Nieves' motorcycle head-on. Nieves was ejected from the motorcycle and sustained fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Honda was identified as off-duty NYPD Officer Kevin Richmond. He was transported to Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. New York State Police investigated the crash.
Nieves' family and friends remembered her as a devoted mother and grandmother who was passionate about riding motorcycles and was active in the local riding community. They organized memorial rides in her honor following her death.
