OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/12/2021, Harris County Precinct 3 constable deputies responded to a welfare check at a residence in the 8500 block of Nemard Lane involving a 16-year-old girl. After the girl was safely removed from the home, 44-year-old Dexter Attaway opened fire on deputies, with one bullet striking a deputy's Taser and narrowly missing him. A SWAT response was initiated, but Attaway escaped from the residence, carjacked a pickup truck, and fled east toward Chambers County.
During the approximately 42-mile pursuit, Attaway exchanged gunfire with pursuing officers while driving on Interstate 10. Near Jenkins Road in Chambers County, he crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into a Texas Department of Public Safety patrol SUV. A shootout followed immediately after the collision. Attaway sustained a gunshot wound and was airlifted to a Houston hospital, where he died the following day. The DPS trooper suffered minor injuries in the crash. Investigators reported they could not immediately determine whether Attaway's fatal gunshot wound was inflicted by law enforcement or was self-inflicted during the exchange of gunfire.
The incident was investigated by the Texas Rangers. Public reporting identified Attaway as a caretaker at the residence where the welfare check originated. The investigation also documented that the pursuit involved multiple agencies, including Harris County Precinct 3 constables, the Harris County Sheriff's Office, Chambers County deputies, and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers.
