OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/08/2021, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constables responded to a Walmart at 21150 Kuykendahl Road after employees recognized a man and woman from an internal Walmart security bulletin involving a series of thefts at another nearby Walmart. Store personnel reported the group again concealed merchandise and left the store without paying before getting into a vehicle in the parking lot.
Deputies attempted to detain the occupants as the vehicle was leaving the parking lot. One man got out of the vehicle and walked away. According to investigators, he then produced a handgun and fired multiple rounds at the deputy constables. The deputies returned fire, striking him. He died at the scene. The vehicle fled the parking lot, but the remaining two occupants were located several miles away by Harris County Sheriff's Office investigators and were taken into custody for questioning. Investigators recovered a handgun with an empty magazine near the deceased man.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit investigated the shooting with assistance from the Harris County District Attorney's Office. I searched for later developments, including identification of the deceased, identification of the deputy constables, body-camera releases, lawsuits, and prosecutorial findings. I could not verify any publicly released records identifying the deceased or the involved deputy constables, and I did not locate any later civil litigation or public prosecutorial report related to the shooting.
