On 07/27/2023, Alton Police Department officers attempted to stop a vehicle driven by 39-year-old Bruce Theodore Garcia. Authorities did not publicly disclose the reason for the attempted traffic stop. Garcia continued driving while police pursued him through Alton. The pursuit continued onto Los Ebanos Road near Mile 5 Road, where Garcia lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle struck the embankment of an irrigation canal and overturned into the canal.
Emergency responders recovered Garcia from the submerged vehicle and transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Texas Department of Public Safety assisted with the investigation into the crash.
