REASON FOR CHASE: At approximately 3:50 a.m., Houston Police Department officers responded to a reported burglary in progress at a car dealership at 18225 Eastex Freeway near Will Clayton Parkway. Police encountered people attempting to steal vehicles from the dealership and saw a blue Dodge Challenger attempting to leave. After officers found the Challenger abandoned with its engine running, a gray Dodge Charger accelerated away from across the street. HPD officers initiated a pursuit.

NARRATIVE:
On 05/21/2021, Houston police responded to the dealership after receiving a report that several people were attempting to steal vehicles. Police said the group had obtained a lockbox containing vehicle keys and was attempting to take multiple cars from the lot.

Officers initially saw a blue Dodge Challenger attempting to leave the dealership. The Challenger traveled toward the rear of the property, where officers subsequently found it abandoned with its engine still running. As additional HPD patrol vehicles arrived, a gray Dodge Charger accelerated away from a dark area across the street. Police initiated a high-speed pursuit.

HPD pursued the Charger northbound on the Eastex Freeway and then westbound on the North Sam Houston Tollway. Police reported that the pursuit reached speeds of approximately 120 mph. Officers lost sight of the Charger before the Hardy Toll Road exit but continued west on the Sam Houston Parkway before terminating the pursuit.

A short time later, officers found a vehicle matching the Charger crashed near the intersection of the Sam Houston Parkway service road and Hardy Toll Road. Police determined that the car had been traveling at high speed as the driver attempted to turn from the Beltway toward the southbound Hardy Toll Road, lost control and struck a utility pole and wall. The vehicle caught fire.

Police pulled the 18-year-old driver from the burning vehicle. Emergency personnel transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Contemporary reports did not publicly identify him.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant E. Fendia and Officer J. Hill investigated the fatal crash. They were crash investigators and are not identified as the officers who conducted the pursuit.
