On November 8, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Mississippi Highway Patrol troopers attempted to stop a vehicle in Flora, Mississippi, for an alleged traffic violation. The driver did not stop. Officers escalated a chase that continued into Yazoo City, during which the driver lost control on Jerry Clower Boulevard. The vehicle left the road, traversed a ditch, struck a parked car, and became airborne.

The car then collided with a light pole and overturned multiple times before coming to rest in a yard on Talbert Drive. Emergency responders used the Jaws of Life to extricate the driver, who was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in unknown condition.

The passenger, 20-year-old Mississippi Valley State University junior linebacker Ryan Quinney from Mobile, Alabama, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. Police have not explained why they pursued the vehicle at high speed.

On November 6, 2024, at approximately 4:30 p.m., the Jackson County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic violence incident in Lenawee County, where 31-year-old Jacob Austin Hikes allegedly shot his brother. Charles Nara was wanted by police for child sexual abuse. He was reportedly locked in an apartment building and sent a child out with a note informing them that he had guns and a lot of gasoline in the apartment. Pennsylvania State police arrived and brought SERT. Loud noise was heard coming from the apartment. Police put out the fire and found Charles Nero and Megan Kulenovic dead inside. They both died during the SERT siege by unknown mechanism.
