Officer Sauvage stopped a blue pickup truck around 11:27 a.m. on April 16, 2021. After the vehicle came to a stop, the officer made contact with the occupants. When Sauvage opened the driver's door, the front seat passenger, Sammie Joe Barbosa, fired a handgun, striking the officer in the hand. In response, the officer shot and killed Barbosa and Alex Anthony Garcia, the other front seat occupant. A woman in the back seat was wounded.
