Officer Sauvage stopped a blue pickup truck around 11:27 a.m. on April 16, 2021. When the vehicle came to a stop, the officer made contact with the occupants. As the officer opened the driver's door, the front seat passenger, Alex Anthony Garcia, fired a handgun, striking the officer in his hand. In response, the officer shot and killed Garcia and Sammie Joe Barbosa, the other front seat occupant. A woman in the back seat was wounded.
