On January 22, 2025, a 77-year-old male inmate was found unresponsive in his cell at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Deputies and jail medical staff provided emergency medical care until the Rancho Cucamonga Fire Department arrived and assumed lifesaving efforts. The inmate was pronounced deceased at the scene. Authorities noted that the decedent had been hospitalized in the weeks prior and was suffering from numerous serious medical conditions. He had been in custody since May 2024 following an arrest in Hesperia on suspicion of attempted murder. The incident is under investigation by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department's Specialized Investigations Division.
