On January 14, 2025, undercover officers with the San Antonio Police Department attempted to pull over a 19-year-old who was suspected of possessing a large amount of narcotics. Pinero fled the scene, and while officers did not pursue him directly, they followed him with a helicopter. The teen eventually lost control of his vehicle near the intersection of Pyron Street and Otto Street, striking and killing 46-year-old Ronda Ellen Duke, who was walking on the sidewalk. The incident is under investigation.
