OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 01/28/2025, Konoa Wilson, 16, was shot and killed by San Diego Police Officer Daniel Goldoutside the Santa Fe Depot in downtown San Diego. Wilson was fleeing from another teenager who had fired a gun at him inside the station.

Surveillance video shows another teenager firing at Wilson on the station's west platform. Wilson ran through a corridor toward Kettner Boulevard. Gold and another officer were nearby on an unrelated call when they heard the gunfire and moved toward the station with their weapons drawn. As Wilson emerged from the corridor, he crossed directly in front of Gold. Gold immediately fired twice at Wilson before identifying himself as a police officer.Wilson was struck in the back and died at a hospital less than an hour later.

Wilson was carrying a concealed handgun under his clothing near his right thigh, which officers discovered while attempting to provide medical aid. However, released surveillance and body-camera footage showed no indication that Wilson drew, pointed or fired that gun during his encounter with Gold. The gunfire that caused officers to approach the station had been fired at Wilson by another teenager.

BODY-CAMERA / VIDEO: San Diego released an edited body-camera video and surveillance footage depicting the shooting. The footage shows Wilson fleeing the earlier gunfire, emerging from the station and encountering Gold. Gold fired almost immediately. The city has not released all of the underlying unedited video, recordings and other records associated with the shooting.

LAWSUIT / $30 MILLION SETTLEMENT: Wilson's parents sued the City of San Diego and Officer Daniel Gold in June 2025, alleging that Gold used unlawful deadly force against their son as he fled from someone who was shooting at him. On 12/09/2025, the San Diego City Council unanimously approved a $30 million settlement with Wilson's family. The settlement was described as one of the largest wrongful-death settlements arising from a police killing in U.S. history.

2026 PUBLIC-RECORDS DISPUTE: On 08/19/2026, the First Amendment Coalition sent San Diego City Attorney Heather Ferbert a letter demanding immediate disclosure of additional records concerning Wilson's killing and threatening litigation if the city continued withholding them. The organization had submitted a California public-records request in May seeking unedited police video, recordings and other records associated with the shooting.

The city responded that the requested materials were exempt because an investigation remained ongoing and because of confidentiality protections. The First Amendment Coalition disputes those grounds and alleges that the city's continued withholding violates California police-transparency laws. The organization argues that more than 18 months after the shooting, the public remains entitled to the complete records rather than only the limited edited footage already released. The San Diego City Attorney's Office declined to comment on the threatened litigation.
