On January 21, 2021, around 1 a.m., College Station Police Department officers and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by 33-year-old Ryan Daniel Stallings. Investigators suspected Stallings was transporting large quantities of drugs. During the stop, Stallings allegedly retrieved a handgun from the center console of his vehicle. In response, Officer Matthew Newton, an eight-year veteran of the department, discharged his weapon, fatally striking Stallings. The incident occurred near the intersection of TX-6 Frontage Road and University Drive E in College Station, Texas.
