On January 15, 2021, El Paso Police Department officers responded to reports of a man firing a gun near Interstate 10 and along Thunderstorm Drive. Upon arrival, officers encountered 27-year-old Jean Paul Stanley, who was reportedly intoxicated and armed with a rifle. Stanley allegedly pointed the rifle at the officers, prompting them to open fire, resulting in his death. Prior to the confrontation, Stanley had informed police that he was suicidal.
