OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On January 28, 2025, Edinburg Police Department officers responded to a report of a man threatening a neighbor and waving a firearm in the 2800 block of El Paso Street. Upon arrival, officers encountered 58-year-old Felipe Zuniga, who pointed what appeared to be a firearm at them before barricading himself inside a residence. The department's SWAT team used an armored vehicle to breach the front door, at which point Zuniga again pointed the weapon at officers. An officer then shot Zuniga, who was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead. It was later determined that the weapon Zuniga possessed was a BB gun designed to resemble a real firearm. The Texas Rangers are conducting a criminal investigation into the incident, while the Edinburg Police Department is conducting an internal investigation.
