On 08/20/2025, Phoenix police responded to reports of a man armed with a hatchet near the 3700 block of East McDowell Road. The man was identified as 47-year-old Rocky Joe Ellis. Just before 2:00 a.m. on August 16, 2025, Crestview Police found a vehicle parked near a closed business in the 1600 block of South Ferdon Boulevard. Inside was a person with a firearm who made suicidal remarks. Officers engaged in conversation for nearly three hours seeking a peaceful resolution. The situation escalated when the individual pointed the firearm at an officer, and police opened fire and killed the person. No officers were injured. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an independent investigation.

On 08/16/2025, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Batavia Police and Kane County deputies responded to the 1200 block of East Wilson Street for reports of an armed man. The 39-year-old fired at officers. Police opened fire, and he was killed. The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is conducting an investigation, and results will be submitted to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

On 08/16/2025, shortly after noon, Broward Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 10200 block of Griffin Road in Cooper City regarding reports that a man had shot himself. When deputies arrived, the man was located with an apparent self-inflicted injury. As a deputy approached, the man attacked him. The deputy opened fire and killed him. The man’s mother and the deputy were transported to the hospital with non-gunshot injuries. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.

On 08/15/2025, Toledo Police Department officers attempted to serve a warrant at a residence in the 800 block of South Toledo. While officers were outside making entry, an individual inside the home fatally shot themself. The person was pronounced dead at the scene. The case remains under investigation by the Toledo Police Department.

On 08/15/2025, at approximately 8:00 p.m., an off-duty NYPD detective assigned to the Internal Affairs Bureau encountered Jesse Campbell, 44, outside Andrew’s Diner on Hylan Boulevard in Staten Island. Campbell was holding a BB gun when he was confronted. The detective opened fire, striking Campbell. He was transported to Staten Island University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The incident remains under investigation.

On 08/15/2025, around 3:30 a.m., Denison Police responded to a call at Washington Park. Officers encountered 36-year-old Feglys Antonio Campos Arriba, who reportedly became uncooperative. During a struggle, an officer was seriously injured. The officer discharged their weapon, killing Campos Arriba at the scene. The officer was treated at a local hospital and later released. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is conducting an independent investigation.

On 08/15/2025, at approximately 3:12 a.m., Laredo Police Department officers responded to reports of a man making threats near West Montgomery Street and McDonnell Avenue. The individual, later identified as Carlos Fernandez, 29, was believed to be armed and intoxicated. He reportedly assaulted a man in the 300 block of West Elm Street, striking him with a bottle and kicking him while he was on the ground. Officers located Fernandez near West Saunders Street and East San Francisco Avenue. He fled and was later confronted at Olive Street and Valencia Avenue. Fernandez ignored repeated commands to drop an object wrapped in cloth and allegedly pointed it at officers. One officer deployed a Taser without effect, and another officer opened fire, striking him in the abdomen and arm. Fernandez was transported to Laredo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The officer who discharged his weapon was placed on administrative reassignment. The case remains under investigation.

On 08/15/2025, at approximately 6:45 a.m., a Howard County Police Department officer assigned to the Technical Support Section was on duty and operating a 2019 GMC Acadia, an unmarked police vehicle, in the Dobbin Center parking lot in Columbia. The officer struck a 93-year-old woman who was walking in the travel portion of the lot. She was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she was later pronounced dead. Investigators stated speed was not believed to be a factor. The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending investigation.
