OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/25/2023, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office deputies attempted to stop a vehicle that had been reported stolen and was being driven without headlights on Highway 14 near Lake Charles. The driver, 17-year-old Cornelius Fontenot, continued driving while deputies pursued the vehicle.
During the pursuit, Fontenot lost control of the vehicle and crashed. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A 15-year-old passenger suffered critical injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Following Fontenot's death, family and friends organized a fundraiser to assist with funeral expenses and remembered him as a loved son, brother, and friend. The Louisiana State Police investigated the fatal crash.
