On January 26, 2025, at approximately 4:15 p.m., a Jasper County Sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop on State Road 14 near the Pulaski County line in Rensselaer, Indiana. The driver, identified as 42-year-old Matthew Huttle of Hobart, Indiana, was reportedly speeding. During the stop, an altercation occurred between Huttle and the deputy. Huttle was found to be in possession of a firearm, which he was prohibited from carrying due to prior felony convictions. The deputy discharged his weapon, fatally wounding Huttle. AP notes Huttle had received a Trump pardon in 2020 for an earlier federal case.
