On 07/14/2021, at approximately 11:00 a.m., FBI agents were conducting a coordinated operation involving arrest and search warrants at several Albuquerque locations following an investigation conducted with the Albuquerque Police Department and Drug Enforcement Administration. Agents encountered 31-year-old Marquez Floyd seated in an SUV behind a strip mall near Northeastern Boulevard NE and Wyoming Boulevard NE.
According to a subsequent FBI affidavit, agents surrounded Floyd’s vehicle and ordered him to show his hands. The affidavit states that Floyd reached for a handgun and fired through the SUV’s window, striking an FBI agent. Multiple agents returned fire, killing Floyd in the alley behind the shopping center. The wounded agent was hospitalized.
Court records showed that federal investigators had monitored Floyd for nearly two years and were preparing to arrest him while searching locations connected to their investigation. The operation included plans to seize firearms, drugs, telephones, computers and other potential evidence. The FBI identified Floyd two days after the shooting but did not publicly identify the agents who fired.
