NARRATIVE:
On 04/23/2021 at approximately 5:45 a.m., an unidentified male was driving a pickup truck north on South Shadeland Avenue with one passenger. In the 1000 block, the pickup crossed the median and collided with a privately owned vehicle driven south by an off-duty Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer.

The pickup driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger was transported to a hospital with injuries whose severity was not disclosed. The off-duty officer was also hospitalized with injuries of undisclosed severity.

The officer was off duty and driving a personal vehicle. Public reporting does not indicate that the officer was responding to a police call, pursuing another vehicle, using emergency equipment or otherwise acting in a law-enforcement capacity when the collision occurred.
