OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/20/2021, a Chanute Police Department officer shot 28-year-old Brandon Lee Schlichting near 4th Street and Evergreen Avenue after police received a report of someone looking into vehicle windows. A single officer initially responded and encountered Schlichting shortly before 7:30 p.m.
According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, when the officer approached Schlichting, Schlichting removed a weapon from a holster and allegedly pointed it at the officer. The officer fired one round, striking Schlichting in the head. The publicly available KBI account does not identify the weapon by make or type beyond describing it as a weapon, nor does the available reporting indicate that Schlichting fired at the officer.
The officer immediately attempted lifesaving measures. Other officers and EMS personnel arrived and continued treatment. Schlichting was initially transported to Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center and subsequently transferred approximately 100 miles away to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. He remained alive for more than a day after the shooting and died at approximately 1:15 a.m. on 08/22/2021. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation's Crime Scene Response Team investigated the shooting independently of Chanute police. KBI announced that its completed investigation would be submitted to the Neosho County Attorney for review. The agency's public update announcing Schlichting's death stated that the investigation remained underway and that no further information would be released at that time.

Searches for the completed KBI investigation, a Neosho County Attorney charging decision, grand-jury disposition, body-camera or dash-camera release, civil-rights litigation, wrongful-death action, or subsequent detailed reconstruction did not locate a publicly available follow-up establishing any of those developments. Schlichting was born 12/09/1992. He was an only child and was survived by his mother, Cynthia Lee, and father, Desmond Schlichting. His family memorial describes a young man who was particularly passionate about music, dancing, drawing and sketching and who was closely attached to his dog, Monster.
