OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/10/2021, shortly after midnight, a Clearwater police officer attempted to stop an SUV after observing it swerving across lanes on Court Street near Missouri Avenue. The driver made a U-turn and accelerated away. The officer did not continue pursuing the vehicle. Witnesses reported the SUV then traveled the wrong way westbound on one-way Chestnut Street at a high rate of speed. While attempting to avoid an oncoming vehicle, the driver lost control, rolled the SUV, and crashed into a medical office building near Chestnut Street and Prospect Avenue. Twenty-eight-year-old passenger Sasha Marie Hudtwalcker-Grey died at the scene. The driver, Pedro Castro, was transported to a hospital with injuries.
The investigation determined Castro was driving on a suspended license. Toxicology testing later showed his blood alcohol concentration was approximately twice Florida's legal limit, and he also tested positive for THC, hydromorphone, and midazolam. Castro was charged with vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter, fleeing to elude law enforcement causing death, driving with a suspended or revoked license causing death, and related offenses. Public records also showed he had multiple prior prison terms before the crash.
