Officers from the Lakeland Police Department were dispatched at 6:25 a.m. to the Cobblestone Landing townhomes following a 911 call reporting a man with a gun. Upon arrival, three officers encountered a man with a handgun standing alongside a 37-year-old woman in the parking lot. As the woman turned toward one of the officers, the man pointed his gun and fatally shot her in the abdomen. Officer Brent Behrens then shot and killed the man, identified as Howayne T. Gayle.
