On December 3, 2021, 31-year-old former NFL player Glenn Foster Jr. was arrested in Reform, Alabama, after a high-speed chase resulting from alleged speeding and attempting to elude police. He was charged with reckless endangerment and resisting arrest and was taken to the Pickens County Jail in Carrollton, Alabama. During his incarceration, Foster was involved in an altercation with another inmate, leading to additional charges of assault and robbery. A judge ordered a mental health evaluation for Foster, but on December 6, 2021, while being transported to a medical facility in Tuscaloosa, he was found unresponsive in the back of a law enforcement vehicle upon arrival and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. An autopsy conducted by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences determined the cause of death to be hypertensive cardiovascular disease, indicating natural causes. However, Foster's family has filed a lawsuit alleging that he was subjected to excessive force, including being beaten, tased, and strangled while in custody. As of December 2024, a federal judge has allowed the lawsuit to proceed on claims of excessive force and failure to intervene.
