OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 02/26/2025, Hamilton County deputies responded to a report of a man later identified as Claudio Sanchez walking in Ooltewah with a firearm. When deputies made contact, Sanchez fired at deputies with a long gun. Deputies opened fire. Sanchez retreated and barricaded himself inside a residence on Rising Fawn Lane, prompting a SWAT deployment and extended standoff.
During the standoff, Hamilton County SWAT deployed chemical agents described by authorities as tear gas and “hot gas” in an effort to force Sanchez out of the home. While law enforcement operations were ongoing, the residence caught fire. Fire crews extinguished the blaze and authorities located Sanchez deceased inside the structure.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was requested by the 11th Judicial District Attorney General to conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting and resulting fire. TBI confirmed Sanchez’s identity. As of early 2026, no final public report has been released detailing whether Sanchez was struck by police gunfire, the definitive cause of death, or the exact origin of the fire.
Law enforcement has not released the names of the deputies involved. No officers have been charged. No public ruling from the District Attorney General’s office clearing or disciplining deputies has been announced.
