OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 02/26/2025, deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to a reported arson at a residence on the 8700 block of Scott Street in Rosemead. Deputies located 56-year-old Susan Lu outside the residence. She went back inside and did not comply with deputies’ attempts to contact her. A Mental Evaluation Team and negotiators remained on scene for several hours attempting communication.
Detectives obtained a search and arrest warrant related to an alleged assault involving fire. Shortly after midnight on 02/27/2025, deputies entered the residence to serve the warrant. Inside the home, Susan Lu was holding a meat cleaver. Deputies issued commands for her to drop it and deployed a 40 mm less-lethal launcher. Deputy Gregory Chico then fired their service weapons, striking her.
Deputies requested medical assistance. She was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
In July 2025, Lu’s family filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit alleging she was experiencing a mental health crisis and that deputies used unnecessary deadly force during the warrant service.
