On 02/26/2025, Charleston County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop a vehicle near the intersection of Fort Johnson Road and Silver Leaf Circle on James Island. The driver continued driving, and deputies escalated a pursuit. During the chase, the vehicle left the roadway and crashed near the intersection.
Joshua Richardson, 31, who was riding as a passenger in the fleeing vehicle, died from injuries sustained in the crash. Two other occupants of the vehicle were transported for medical treatment with reported injuries. Authorities have not publicly released the name of the driver in connection with the pursuit.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol assumed responsibility for investigating the crash and the pursuit. As of early 2026, no deputies have been charged, and no public disciplinary findings or prosecutorial rulings regarding the pursuit have been announced.The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office has not publicly disclosed the names of the deputies involved in the pursuit.
