OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 02/26/2025 at approximately 2:30 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers attempted to stop a van driven by 21-year-old Seijah Rivera in the San Fernando Valley area for a traffic-related matter. Rivera continued driving, and officers escalated a pursuit. The chase ended on Sunnybrae Avenue in Winnetka when Rivera stopped the van and exited.
According to CHP statements, Rivera exited the vehicle while allegedly holding a handgun. Officers opened fire, striking him. Paramedics responded and pronounced Rivera dead shortly after the shooting.
The Los Angeles Police Department responded to assist with perimeter control, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department participated in follow-up coordination. The California Department of Justice assumed investigative oversight under state protocol for officer-involved shootings. Authorities have not publicly released the names of the CHP officers who fired their weapons. As of early 2026, no criminal charges against the officers have been announced.
