OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On March 6, 2025, at approximately 11:15 a.m., officers from the Abington Township Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance at the Rosemore Gardens Apartments in Glenside, Pennsylvania. An 11-year-old girl reported that her mother's boyfriend, Wyleek Tinsley, had fired a gun inside the apartment. Upon arrival, officers heard a woman screaming and a subsequent gunshot, prompting them to forcibly enter the apartment. Inside, they encountered Tinsley holding an object, later identified as a cellphone, in a darkened hallway. Believing he posed an immediate threat, two officers discharged their weapons, striking Tinsley. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office conducted an investigation and concluded that the officers' use of force was lawful, citing the perceived threat to the woman's safety and the officers' own. The investigation noted that Tinsley's DNA was found on a loaded firearm recovered from the bedroom, and two bullet holes were observed in the bedroom walls.
Family's Lawsuit and Allegations:
Following the district attorney's decision not to file criminal charges against the officers, Tinsley's family, represented by attorney Joseph Marrone, announced plans to file a federal civil rights lawsuit. The family alleges a lack of transparency in the investigation, particularly concerning the refusal to release body camera footage of the incident. They argue that Tinsley was unarmed at the time of the shooting and question the officers' account of the events leading up to his death. The family contends that the public has a right to view the bodycam footage to assess the justification for the use of deadly force.
