On October 16, 2024, at approximately 4:15 p.m., Stewart Robinson, a 54-year-old inmate housed in the infirmary of the Alachua County Jail, was found hanging in his room during a routine check conducted every 15 minutes. Detention staff initiated life-saving measures before transporting him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Robinson had been arrested on October 5 for failing to appear at a pre-trial hearing related to a previous arrest. Following the incident, Detention Officer Philip Carr was suspended for failing to conduct proper inmate checks and falsifying records. After an appeal, Carr was reinstated on January 31, 2025.
