On March 28, 2025, a Latino male was driving a vehicle suspected of human smuggling when Texas Department of Public Safety and U.S. Border Patrol officers initiated a pursuit as part of Operation Lone Star. The vehicle attempted to cross a flooded roadway near Edcouch and crashed into a canal. The driver drowned at the crash site.
