OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On March 30, 2025, at approximately 9:00 a.m., Shelby County Sheriff's Office deputies discovered 36-year-old Courtney Berry unresponsive in a restroom at the Shelby County Jail. Jail staff and Memphis Fire Department paramedics administered life-saving measures before transporting Berry to Regional One Health in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead. Berry had been in custody since February 21, 2025, held without bond due to a state petition to revoke his suspended sentence following a conviction for attempting to possess a firearm as a convicted felon. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office indicated that a pre-existing medical condition may have contributed to his death, though the official cause will be determined by the medical examiner.
