On April 4, 2025, at approximately 5:30 p.m., a Michigan City Police officer conducted a traffic stop on a red Dodge SUV for an equipment violation. The driver, identified as 21-year-old Jorge Meza of South Bend, exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers pursued Meza, who was reportedly armed. During the chase, an officer discharged their weapon, striking Meza. He was transported to Franciscan Health Hospital and pronounced dead. The Indiana State Police are investigating the shooting.
