Marcus Robert Sanders, 51, was found unresponsive in his cell during a routine welfare check at Columbus County Detention Center at approximately 10:14 p.m. on April 2, 2025. anders was transported to Columbus Regional Healthcare System, where he was pronounced dead. Sanders had been detained since March 28, 2025, on multiple drug-related charges. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation; preliminary findings indicate no signs of foul play.
