On 07/09/2023, Amarillo PD attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 3600 block of NE 9th Avenue because the license plate on the car was a mismatch to the vehicle. The car stopped. The driver exited on command. A backseat passenger reportedly got out and pointed a gun at police. Amarillo PD fired into the vehicle that still had 2 passengers, Andrew Scot Norton who had pointed the gun and Isidra Clara Castillo, another passenger. Both were killed by police during the traffic stop.
