Gregory Fitzgerald, 41, was approached by San Joaquin County deputies in east Stockton regarding alleged illegal dumping. He fled on foot. Deputies followed him to a nearby house where he climbed onto the roof. Negotiations followed, and during the standoff, a deputy opened fire, striking Fitzgerald. He was transported to a local hospital where he died. The California Department of Justice is investigating under Assembly Bill 1506, which mandates independent review when unarmed individuals are killed by police.
