On March 18, 2025, around 4:00 a.m., Illinois State Police attempted a traffic stop on Interstate 74 near Fithian. The driver, 35-year-old Isaiah Edmond, did not stop and police escalated a pursuit. His vehicle crashed, and police engaged him in an altercation. Officers opened fire and shot Edmond. He was transported to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where he was pronounced dead at 5:27 a.m. The incident is under investigation by state police and local authorities.
