OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On April 7, 2025, McIntosh County Sheriff's deputies assisted Checotah Police in responding to an altercation involving John Berry. Berry allegedly threatened law enforcement officers with a rifle and barricaded himself inside a residence. During the standoff, he reportedly fired at drones deployed by law enforcement, and a fire broke out, engulfing the structure. After the fire was extinguished, Berry was found dead inside. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of death as well as the cause of the fire.
