On June 6, 2024, Phillip M. Lee, 49, was found unresponsive in his cell at Pendleton Correctional Facility around 12:45 a.m. Correctional staff attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Lee was awaiting trial for the August 2022 shooting of Richmond Police Officer Seara Burton, who died from her injuries in September 2022. Authorities reported that Lee had a history of severe mental health issues. The Indiana State Police are investigating the death, and no foul play is suspected.
