OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

Charles Faggart, a 31-year-old local chef and father, was arrested on April 6, 2025, by Jacksonville police and booked into Duval County Jail. He had been held for four days when, on April 10, he was declared dead following critical injuries sustained in custody. Officials claimed Faggart suffered a self-inflicted fall, but family members and supporters allege he was beaten by corrections officers. He was hospitalized after being found unresponsive and was declared brain dead before dying. Nine corrections officers were removed from duty following the incident. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office released a heavily redacted report without notifying Faggart’s family or attorney. Protesters, including the Jacksonville Community Action Committee and Northside Coalition, held a demonstration outside the JSO headquarters, demanding the firing and prosecution of the involved officers, full release of unredacted footage, civilian oversight of JSO, and cancellation of a proposed $1 billion jail. Faggart’s mother and 6-year-old son spoke at the rally.
