OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On April 5, 2025, Pocatello Police responded to a disturbance call involving a nonverbal autistic teenager with cerebral palsy who was reportedly holding a kitchen knife in a fenced yard on North Harrison Avenue. Within 12 seconds of arrival, officers commanded 17-year-old Victor Perez to drop the knife. When he did not comply and began to stand, they opened fire, shooting him nine times. Perez underwent multiple surgeries, including the removal of bullets and a leg amputation, before being declared brain-dead. He was removed from life support and died on April 12. The Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force is conducting the investigation. The shooting has drawn public criticism for the rapid use of lethal force and lack of de-escalation.
