OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
Angelica Renee "Bells" Bryan was a 13-year-old girl from Cass Lake, Minnesota, who was killed in a police chase crash on Sunday, April 20, 2025, during a high-speed police pursuit in Itasca County.
According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), Angelica was driving a stolen minivan without headlights around 1:30 a.m. when a sheriff's deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Angelica did not stop. The trooper escalated a chase, reaching speeds over 90 mph. Police deployed spike strips. The pursuit ended when the minivan veered off the road and crashed into a tree near Highway 6 and County Road 11, resulting in Angelica's death at the scene.
Family members revealed that Angelica had been placed in a foster home in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, just hours before the incident. Her mother, Jeannie Wittner, believes Angelica was attempting to return to her home in Cass Lake, stating, "She told me she wanted to be, earlier in the night, just home in her bed" . Angelica's older sister, MacKenzie Johnson, expressed concerns about the support Angelica received, saying, "I don’t think any social worker gave her the help she truly needed."
A GoFundMe campaign has been established by her family to assist with funeral expenses.
