On April 18, 2025, Sacramento police responded to reports of a man with a firearm at a residence on the 4400 block of 71st Street in the Colonial Manor neighborhood. Officers arrived and heard at least one gunshot from inside the home. Police escalated a six-hour standoff, during which the man, 44-year-old Manfred Schield, eventually surrendered peacefully. Inside the home, officers found 68-year-old Nicholas William Pontliana and 64-year-old Cynthia Torres deceased from gunshot wounds.
