On April 22, 2025, around 9:40 p.m., Decatur police responded to a reported retail theft at Walmart on the 800 block of South U.S. Highway 81/287. Officers encountered a 46-year-old man fleeing on foot. Police chased him. During the chase, the man allegedly struck Officer Matthew James with a vehicle. Officer Nathan Anderson opened fire, shooting the man. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Another individual believed to be waiting in a vehicle fled the scene and has not been located. The Texas Rangers are conducting an independent investigation.
