On September 20, 2023, 43-year-old Abel Valensia called 911 to report an armed home invasion at his residence in Hesperia, California. He claimed to be hiding in a closet while intruders were inside. When deputies arrived, Valensia exited the house wearing a mask and holding what appeared to be a handgun. He pointed the weapon at a deputy, who fired at him. Valensia continued to advance, leading to additional deputies arriving and firing upon him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The weapon was later determined to be a BB gun, and the home invasion report was found to be false. No motive for his actions has been disclosed.
