On 04/22/2025, Torrance Bernard Bishop, a 39-year-old Black male inmate at the Athens-Clarke County Jail in Athens, Georgia, was found unresponsive in his cell around 7:55 a.m. during routine morning checks. He was pronounced dead shortly before 10:00 a.m. Bishop had been in custody since November 2024 on charges including entering auto, trespassing, and loitering. In January 2025, a Superior Court judge ordered a mental evaluation prior to his trial; it is unclear if the evaluation had occurred. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into his death.
