OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
Decatur police responded twice on April 15, 2025, to calls involving John Daniel Scott Jr., who was experiencing a mental health crisis. During the second encounter at Brookridge Apartments, officers attempted to arrest Scott due to an outstanding warrant. Scott appeared confused and panicked. Police punched him, shocked him with a Taser, and forced his arms behind his back while he repeatedly said “I’m sorry” and complained of breathing difficulties. He collapsed and was hospitalized within an hour of arriving at the jail. He died on April 22 after a week in intensive care. The Madison County Sheriff's Office, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and FBI are investigating. Bodycam footage is under review.
